Seasonal HVAC Checklist

• Replace or inspect the furnace/air handler filter; confirm arrow direction and a snug fit.
• Open supply/return vents in rooms you use; move furniture off registers.
• Confirm thermostat mode, schedule, and fresh batteries if it uses them.
• Know where the HVAC breakers / switch are — do not reset a repeatedly tripping breaker.
• Clear leaves, toys, and dense weeds from around the outdoor unit; keep airflow space.
• Check that the condensate drain path isn’t overflowing (pan / line area you can see safely).
• Note harsh sun / blockage on the condenser — shade helps a little; blockage hurts a lot.
• Keep the furnace area clear; don’t store paint or cardboard against equipment.
• Test carbon monoxide alarms on each floor (heating season essential).
• Visually check outdoor exhaust/intake terminations aren’t buried in snow or nests (from outside only).
• Listen for new rattles, squeals, or short cycling on a short test run.
• Book a licensed tune-up if the system is aging, under warranty requirements, or showing symptoms you can’t explain.
